GCS was founded in 1979 as a programming company. Early customers included insurance companies, a retail store, a cable television company, and a computer service bureau specializing in financial service firms. In 1981 GCS contracted with Cinfed credit union of Cincinnati to write and install a credit union data processing system to support their then 12,000 members. In 1983 GCS wrote a credit union system to run on a PC network and sold that system to credit unions throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

Because of the progressive credit unions who use the GCS credit union system, GCS has been at the forefront of new technological innovation. Below are the dates of a few significant enhancements to the system:
